The Lord Mayor of Liverpool is the first citizen and chosen representative of the city, acting as a focal point for the community as well as promoting the city, forging national and international links.

The current Lord Mayor, for 2025-2026, is Councillor Barbara Murray.

Each year the Lord Mayor of Liverpool raises money to be distributed to local charities or charities with a Liverpool connection. Liverpool's Lord Mayor's Charity Appeal has helped raise over £1 million for local good causes in recent years.

The Lord Mayor's Charity Appeal 2025-2026 is raising funds for Liverpool Education Grants Charitable Trust (LEGCT).

Background

The Lord Mayor of Liverpool is always a serving Councillor, elected by the full council at its Annual General Meeting held each May, and usually stands for one year in office.

The role of the Lord Mayor includes:
  • Representing the city at civic functions and engagements.
  • Promoting the city nationally and internationally.
  • Supporting local charities and community groups.
  • Attending religious events of all denominations.
  • Meeting delegates from twinned cities
  • Chairing council meetings.
  • Conferring Honorary Freemen and Associations.

Gift Aid

Gift Aid allows UK charities to claim back the basic rate of tax already paid on donations by a donor when that donor is a UK tax payer. This means that we can claim 25p back from the government on your behalf for every £1 donated, boosting the value of your donation by a quarter.
