The Lord Mayor's chosen charity for 2026/27 is the Greenbank Project (charity number: 513814)

The direct beneficiaries during his mayoral year will be Greenbank College education, training and employment services and Greenbank Sports Academy: Sport and recreational opportunities.

The Lord Mayor says:

“I’m determined to raise the highest amount we can for my chosen charity the Greenbank Project this year, and I’m committed to shining a light on the outstanding work they deliver every single day”.

The current Lord Mayor of Liverpool is Councillor William Shortall, for 2026 to 2027.

The Lord Mayor says:

They expect me to embody Liverpool’s highest values and to extend our traditional warm welcome to everyone who calls this place home, the world in one city or comes to share in its spirit.”


What is the role of the Lord Mayor of Liverpool?

The Lord Mayor of Liverpool is known as the first citizen and is the chosen representative of the city, acting as a focal point for the community as well as promoting Liverpool and forging national and international links. The Lord Mayor of Liverpool is always a serving councillor, elected by the full city council at its Annual General Meeting which is held each May, and stands for one year in office.

The Lord Mayor’s duties include:

  • Representing the city at civic functions/engagements
  • Promoting the city nationally and internationally
  • Supporting local charities and community groups
  • Attending religious events of all denominations
  • Meeting delegates from twinned cities
  • Chairing meetings of the Full Council
  • Conferring Honorary Freemen and Freedom of Associations and Institutions.

Gift Aid

Gift Aid allows UK charities to claim back the basic rate of tax already paid on donations by a donor when that donor is a UK tax payer. This means that we can claim 25p back from the government on your behalf for every £1 donated, boosting the value of your donation by a quarter.
